Taboo Topics: What Is Openly Discussed in Serbia, Unlike in Other Cultures

Unexpected Conversation Topics in Serbian Culture

There are topics that are not openly discussed in some cultures, but in Serbia, they are a completely normal part of dialogue. At first, this may be surprising or even shocking, as it contradicts familiar communication norms.

Such topics, which Serbs can easily bring up in conversation, include religion, personal finances, and politics. Discussing them is considered completely natural, whereas in other cultures, they are often under an unspoken ban in polite conversation.

Religion: The Openness of the Orthodox Faith

The first of these topics is religion. Serbs are very open in demonstrating their commitment to the Orthodox faith. When introducing themselves, they often identify not only by their nationality but also by their religion, saying: 'Hello, I am a Serb, I am Orthodox.'

They actively emphasize their shared faith with Russians, seeing Orthodoxy as an important unifying factor. However, despite acknowledging that God is one, many Serbs prefer to visit exclusively Orthodox churches, avoiding synagogues, mosques, or Catholic churches.

For them, there is a clear distinction: there are their own Orthodox churches, and that is where they go. Visiting temples of other denominations can cause them bewilderment, even when it comes to other Christian denominations.

Friendliness and Acceptance in Serbian Orthodox Churches

The atmosphere in Serbian Orthodox churches deserves special mention. There is a sense of welcome and acceptance, with no judgment from other parishioners. No one makes comments about appearance, for instance, if a woman is not wearing a headscarf.

This friendly environment is instilled from childhood, creating a feeling of a large church family. People, especially from villages and small towns, regularly attend their parishes where everyone knows each other. This fosters a strong sense of community and support.

Overall, the Serbian Orthodox Church gives the impression of being very peaceful and open. A calm atmosphere prevails in the churches, and no one will give you a dirty look or purse their lips if a visitor is not dressed according to strict canons.

Finances: No Secrets

The second topic that might be surprising is finances. In Serbia, it is completely normal and acceptable to talk openly about money. Serbs see nothing wrong with asking about their conversational partner's income level.

  • How much do you earn?
  • What is your family's income?
  • How much does it cost to rent an apartment?

Unlike in cultures where financial matters are considered strictly personal and secret, Serbs do not make a secret of it. They freely discuss salaries, prices in stores, and other monetary topics without feeling constrained or awkward.

Politics and History: A Subject for Open Dialogue

The third topic is politics. Serbs are very open to political discussions. Upon learning that their conversational partner is from Russia, they might confidently state: 'You love Putin, right?', perceiving it not as a question, but as a statement. Such conversations can happen anywhere, even at holidays and family gatherings.

  • About the role of Emperor Nicholas II in Serbian history.
  • About the help the Russians provided to the Serbs in their fight against the Turks.

However, all political and historical discussions are conducted very politely. Even if opinions differ, it never leads to conflicts or scandals. The speakers will either listen to each other or simply change the subject.

Reserve in Personal Topics: The Other Side of Openness

Against the backdrop of such openness in discussing religion, finances, and politics, the reserve of Serbs in intimate matters appears particularly contrasting. These topics, unlike the previous ones, are not discussed in company.

In this regard, Serbs are very tactful, reserved, and traditional. In conversations, especially with men, you won't encounter sexualized innuendos or inappropriate comments. This creates a very comfortable and respectful atmosphere.

Thus, Serbian communication culture presents an interesting balance: complete openness on topics considered taboo in other countries, and, conversely, traditional reserve on issues that might be discussed more freely in the Western world.
