Why Serbia is the Optimal Choice for Emigration: A Breakdown of Five Key Aspects

Why Serbia is the Optimal Choice for Emigration: A Breakdown of Five Key Aspects

Searching for a New Home After Georgia

The decision to emigrate to Serbia in 2025 was made after living in Georgia, which was not initially considered a final destination. The process of moving from Georgia to Serbia was thoroughly documented, but the reasons for choosing Serbia specifically often remained behind the scenes.

The main task was to choose a new country to move to from Georgia. Georgia was never the final immigration point, but rather an intermediate stage. Therefore, it became necessary to consider and compare several potential destinations for future life.

Considering Options in Europe

When searching for a new country to live in, several European destinations were considered, each with its own peculiarities. Initially, Poland was the preferred choice, but moving there turned out to be impossible.

Germany was also on the list, but this option was not met with enthusiasm due to a personal dislike of the German language and a lack of interest in the country as a whole. It did not seem like a place one would want to live for a long time.

Spain and Portugal were considered more seriously. These countries were attractive due to their openness to immigration and the availability of special programs, such as the Digital Nomad visa. An additional factor was that friends were also planning to move to Spain, and there was a desire not to part with them.

Distant Destinations: South America and Australia

Besides Europe, more distant countries were also considered as possible options for relocation. In particular, opportunities in South America were explored, including Chile, Argentina, and Brazil.

However, the idea of moving to Brazil was rejected by the husband due to concerns about the high crime rate. Despite its cultural appeal, this factor was decisive. Overall, the continent of South America was perceived as something very distant, almost like 'another planet,' which complicated the decision-making process.

At one point, the idea of Australia was even brought up—as an opportunity to move to a separate continent, far away from everything. However, this option, like other distant destinations, was set aside in favor of a closer and more understandable European path.

Serbia: Ease of Entry and Legalization

Ultimately, the choice fell on Serbia, which turned out to be the simplest and most accessible option of all those listed. One of the main advantages was the visa-free regime, which allowed one to fly into the country without the need to arrange complex entry documents in advance while abroad.

  • By talent: requires a completed higher education degree, which was not suitable in this case.
  • Property purchase: this option was not considered, as there were no immediate plans to buy a home.
  • Opening a sole proprietorship (Individual Entrepreneur): this path proved to be the simplest and was chosen for legalization.

An important factor was the high probability of obtaining a residence permit in Serbia. Unlike Georgia, where at that time there were many rejections even with an established business and paid taxes, in Serbia the approval rate was close to 100%, which provided confidence in successful legalization.

Citizenship, Attitude Towards Immigrants, and City Choice

At the time the decision to move was made, the possibility of applying for a Serbian passport after three years of residence was attractive. However, it is worth noting that this procedure has now become uncertain, and there is no information about citizenship being approved for new applicants, which creates a risk of becoming stateless.

Another important aspect was the attitude towards Russian speakers. In Serbia, it is perceived as more comfortable and friendly compared to Georgia. Despite understanding the historical reasons, the underlying tension in Georgia began to grow tiresome over time.

Finally, the choice of city played a decisive role. After three years of living in the small resort town of Batumi (population around 183,200), there was a desire to return to the rhythm of a large and dynamic European city, similar to my native St. Petersburg. That is why Belgrade was chosen over quieter cities like Novi Sad.
